The musical opens as Paris falls to the Nazis and a stunning spy barely escapes with her life. When a mysterious mastermind blackmails the reluctant heroine back into intelligence for the Allies, Betty Thorpe (Code Name: Cynthia) resolves to seduce the enemy and steal France’s naval codes from the Vichy Embassy in Washington D.C. Politics, sex, and personal truth are up for grabs as the fate of the free world hangs in the balance. Based on the true story of a true American patriot.

In 2012, Code Name: Cynthia received two produced public readings by Chicago Dramatists in association with Porchlight Music Theatre (dir: Michael Weber) and by the Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University (dir: Ray Frewen) including a weeklong workshop. The show was a semi-finalist for the 2012 National Musical Theatre Conference at the O’Neill, the 2012 National Alliance for Musical Theatre Conference, and the 2013 ASCAP New Musical Theatre Festival at the Lied Center. Selections from Code Name: Cynthia have been presented at three ASCAP/Chicago Dramatists New Musical Theatre Works cabarets and featured in the Chicago: Theatre Capital of America symposium at Columbia College. Based on music from the score, Multer & Multer were welcomed as 2011 Dramatists Guild Fellows for the Chicago Writer’s Intensive with Lynn Ahrens, Stephen Flaherty, and Stephen Schwartz, and the writers were featured in the Dramatists Guild Traveling Masters series workshop with Andrew Lippa.  Pallas Theatre Collective is pleased that Multer & Multer have chosen to workshop Code Name: Cynthia towards full production in 2015 with us, here in Washington, D.C.
